Writing a successful personal statement is a journey that begins with self-discovery. I guide the student through a series of exercises that help them land on a topic, or in some cases several topics, that are worthy of exploration. Eventually we agree upon “the big one” but along the way shake out ideas that work well for supplemental essays. Bonus!
I generally coach over Google Meet, Zoom, or a simple phone call, whatever the student prefers. The student and I share Google docs, and I check in regularly via text. Along the way, we set realistic deadlines with the understanding that of course, “life happens” but this process is important and therefore when a deadline needs to be adjusted the student is expected to communicate that need in advance. I find that a mutual respect goes a long way in establishing a healthy working relationship.
